How I Saved $8,500 using the Mexican Dental Care System

By Brian and Jeff On April 1, 2009 Under Other-Reviews

I’m Brian Garvin, currently from Oceanside, Ca. which is North San
Diego County and about an hour north of the Tijuana Mexico border.
About two weeks ago one of my teeth were really aching, so I went to a local Oceanside Dentist for a Dental Care estimate.

After Finding out I needed One Root Canal, 4 Crowns, 7 Fillings and
Chipped Tooth work, this Oceanside Dentist wanted me to pay close to
$10,000. They even offered me a convenient one-year financing plan, with
interest of course, which ended up being $967 a month or something like
that.

Many of you reading this can probably relate to what I’m saying
here when I say I just straight up didn’t have that kind of money
for Dental Care alone, but, it was a catch 22 I still needed to get my
teeth done. I’m an honorably discharged Veteran with 40% coverage, which
means all my medical is covered but no dental. So I’ve heard of several
occasions that you can get your teeth done in Mexico for pennies on the
dollar, and people save a mint doing it.

I was desparate for a solution, so I drove my car South on the
I-5 Freeway until I got to the last exit. It’s the very, very last
exit before you are forced to drive into Mexico. Then I made a left
and a quick right turn right before the McDonalds and parked at
one of the paid parking places, so my car was still on U.S. Soil.

Then I walked through the tunnel and bridge which you enter on
the right side of that open quad area, walk over and across the freeway
and eventually through the big swirly pipe gates that only go one way.

After that I walked down an open area, passed an Inspector and made my
first real right I could make. Then I walked through a 2nd set of these gates,
looked to the left, and that was a Dental Care office. There’s actually
two of them right there. I mean a real, legitimate Dental Care office in Mexico
right when you enter. And no, no cab into town was required, it was a
relatively short walk and plenty of people to help if you get lost,
almost like an airport environment.

So I strolled in and they saw me right away. All that work took
place over 3 visits and about 7 hours of drilling and was all
total about $1,550.00. This Means I saved $8,500.00 or 85% without
having to purchase outrageously expensive Dental Insurance. And doing
this is 100% Legal and Ethical, I even told the Immigration Officer
on the way in I just had my teeth drilled on for four hours, lol.

By the way, it’s $40.00 for a cleaning. I like those prices better.

The Dentist did a great job with the Anesthesia. The Crowns were
Porcelain, not Gold or Steel. The Dental Office wasn’t ultra fancy, no
plasma TV viewing while you’re getting your teeth drilled. But it was
relatively painless and they did their job with dignity and I felt I was
treated with respect and all the financial terms were outlined up front.

All in all, It was a relatively easy and even fun experience. I made it
a point to eat lunch there all three times I was there. I really like
their road-side all Beef Tacos and big Fruit Bowls. There are a few
places in that little area right after you enter to sit down and
eat at, I ate at one of them. As they say Delicioso!

Each time I re-entered the U.S., I had to show my Drivers License. Be
careful, rumor is they might be requiring passports to re-enter soon.

I liked the experience so much, I also plan on going there every
few months for a cleaning, because that’s what you’re supposed to do!

Great to know your dental treatment experience. The price estimation for dental care is so high that just for a root canal and filling they charge so much! I prefer to do my dental treatment abroad than paying a fat cheque to local dentist.
