If you have been following the direct marketing trend and taking a look at what products have been offered, then Alpine Industries is no stranger to you. Back in the early nineties, Alpine Industries was putting out air purifiers in the form of ozone generators, which circulate air by providing an electric charge and can remove many pollutants from the air. In 1995, many marketers and networkers received a real shock when the Federal Trade Commission challenged these claims. Essentially, the FTC stated that Alpine Industries had made their claims of purer air without any substantiation at all. This national organization organized a court order against the firm and its president, imposing a civil penalty of more than 10,000 dollars per violation. This court order demands that the president and the company provide reliable and competent documentation saying that the product did everything it said that they did. Alpine Industries air cleaner made a lot of promises, including the removal of visible and invisible pollutants from the area, prevention of allergies and a relief from asthma. These were hefty claims to make, given that a scientific study conducted by the FTC stated that all their generators did was remove visible pollutants from the air. At the time, the company decide to avoid being brought to trial on their charges and agreeing that they would abide by the terms of the court order. However, since the order was issued in September of 1995, Alpine Industries seems to have reneged on the agreement and once again published unsubstantiated claims regarding the efficiency of their products. The company also filed a suit against the FTC's investigation, claiming that they are within the bounds of the court order. This case is still currently pending. One of the leading issues with Alpine Industries' product was that their customer satisfaction claims were calculated in a fairly unscientific way. The company claimed that more than 90 percent of its customers were happy with the product three days after the purchase. To get a better idea of the worth of product, a wait of at least a year would have been necessary. While many people did make some money off of the opportunities offered by this company, they were far outnumbered by the people the FTC claimed were being cheated. As can easily be seen, there are several issues with the opportunities that had been provided by Alpine Industries and it is once again a reminder to take a careful look at the products you are willing to support, its scientific development and how well the company itself works with organizations like the FTC. |
